Mr. David Keith Plemmons

David Plemmons was born on June 27th 1946 in Asheville North Carolina. Growing up attended Lee Edwards High School. He developed his toughness by playing Rugby at Christ School and the Asheville school for boys. At 18 years of age David joined the Marines in 1966. David always loved music and played drums in the rock cover band the “Centarians” and did so until he became married at the age of 22 (for less than a year). David studied and worked in hotel management at first but ultimately turned to another one of his passions: cooking. After receiving a degree in culinary arts from AB Tech in Asheville, North Carolina, David moved to Hilton Head to work at Café’ Calibague in Sea Pines . Later he worked at Alexanders in Palmetto Dunes and then also at Skull Creek and over this time transformed into a Master Chef. Living in Hilton Head allowed David to play golf and to join the Hilton Head Rugby Club where he remained a team member into his early 50s. In the mid 1990s, David moved to Sarasota, Florida to be closer to his lovely British mother, Peggy Plemmons and his sister, Carla Rice. There he worked as a chef for the Linger Lodge. While there he was featured on the food channel. Later he worked at other restaurants but most notably the Lakewood Ranch Country Club for 10 years and then another four years at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. After a near death fire at his home he moved to Westminster, South Carolina to semi-retire only to later become the caretaker and manager of the Sand Castle resort, the home of Matthew McGahren and his niece, Elissa Rice McGahren, the daughter of his sister Carla. There he became the surrogate grandfather to his grand nephews, Luke and Troy McGahren, and the surrogate father figure for Matthew McGahren. All in all, David was a polymath, a man who can do almost anything. He had a wide range of knowledge and skills across many different fields, similar to a “Renaissance man” He knew how to fix almost anything without using YouTube. He knew how to make you laugh. David loved the Tar Heels and being an American. He was also a man of generosity and selflessness. Always giving of his time and money whenever possible. He will be greatly missed.
