Janet Marie Hunter Herman

Janet Marie Hunter Herman, 83, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, September 27, 2022, at Oconee Memorial Hospital, Seneca, SC surrounded by her family. Jan was born on May 5, 1939, in Girard, OH to the late Arthur and Gertrude Hunter (Jensen). She graduated from Liberty High School in 1957 and went on to receive her bachelor’s in education from Miami University of Ohio and a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Southern Mississippi. Jan’s true hometown was Bucyrus, Ohio where she lived for over 40 years and raised her family. She taught for decades in the Bucyrus School District and in the Adult Education program. Jan loved teaching the most challenging students and in turn they loved her back. The dedication and caring she showed her students has remained impactful as demonstrated by the kind words and thanks from these students throughout the years. She always loved to brag that she taught long enough teach some of her first students’ children. Jan loved the Bucyrus community and displayed this love through her numerous volunteering activities from serving on local boards to working the desk at the hospital to serving for many years as the Bucyrus High School prom chairperson alongside Boyd Long, long-time facilities supervisor at BHS. She would say she only did it because her kids made her, but she secretly loved helping the students put on a terrific prom even after all her children graduated! Jan will be forever remembered as an advocate for those less fortunate, an avid bridge player, a prolific and skilled knitter, always up for a great party, for her love of travel, as the adventurous “Nana” always taking her grandchildren on trips to see historic places, and most of all as a loyal and devoted friend. Her devotion can be summed up by one dear friend relaying a story about when she moved to Bucyrus and staying up until 4:00am talking with Jan on the friend’s first day in town and how comforting and caring Jan’s advice was to her. In addition to her parents, Ms. Herman was preceded in death by her son: Benjamin Arthur Herman and is survived by her children: Thad Herman, Stacey Herman (Joe Dorant), and Nicci Hanewald (Matt); Sisters: Barbara May (David McGrath) and Lin (Bud) Jackson; Brother; Ken (Judy) Hunter; and Grandchildren: Emily Hanewald, Thomas Hanewald, Ryan Herman, Gabby Herman, Olivia Herman, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Bucyrus, Ohio. Until then, please raise a glass to Jan to celebrate a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org) and Planned Parenthood (www.plannedparenthood.org/), two causes that were near to her heart.
