November 6, 1938 - November 16, 2021
James (Jim) Alfred Abercrombie, Jr., died on November 16, 2021, in Seneca, SC. Jim was born on November 6, 1938, in Gainsville, GA, to James Alfred Abercrombie Sr. and Majorie Vernon (Allison) Abercrombie. He grew up in North Georgia as a small child, lived in Philadelphia, PA, Jackson, MS, and Lufkin, TX. He graduated high school in 1957 in Lufkin. Jim attended North Georgia Military College in Dahlonega, Piedmont College in Demorest, GA, and the University of Georgia where he graduated with a B.S. in forestry (1964) and continued his education one more year in biology. While attending Piedmont College, Jim met Carolyn Louise (Lou) Wansley. Jim and Lou married on September 1, 1962, and lived in Gainesville, Atlanta, Dahlonega, and Blairsville over the next 8 years. Jim served in the US Army until he was honorably discharged in 1963. Jim worked for the U.S. Forest Service and Lou taught school. God blessed them with two children while in Georgia: Angela Lynne (1964) and Linda Ann (1968). In 1969, Jim moved his family to Mena, AR, to work in the Ouachita National Forest. While in Mena, Christine Alicia (1971) was born. He loved to hunt, fish, work and walk the land, Georgia athletics, and cherished friends and family. He professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and attended the Presbyterian church throughout his life. In 1978, Jim and the family moved to Walhalla, SC, to serve in the Sumter National Forest as a Silviculturalist. He published articles in reputable forestry journals, taught at Clemson University as a guest lecturer in the forestry department, and did significant research in land management and timber removal practices. Jim retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 1995 and after the girls finished school and were married, Jim and Lou moved to Seneca, SC, and settled. Jim enjoyed his friends, his family, and his grandchildren in those retired years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2012. Jim was a good friend to have, loyal and kind. He suffered with partial paralysis from spinal stenosis which left him bedridden after Lou died of ALS in 2016. He spent his final years at Lila Doyle with frequent visitors, in poor health, but in good spirits. Jim was predeceased by his father: James Alfred Abercrombie Sr., his mother: Majorie Vernon (Allison) Abercrombie, his wife: Carolyn Louise (Lou) Wansley, and his sister: Gayle (Abercrombie) Avera. Jim leaves behind his three daughters: Angela Lynne Holbert of Easley, Linda Ann Cloer (Clayton) of Ocoee, FL, and Christine Abercrombie Arnold (Scott) of West Union; his six grandchildren: Nathaniel McCarter Cloer of Greenville, James Adrian Cloer of West Ashley, Alicia Ann Holbert of Easley, Jamieson Christine Stephens of West Union, Carter Louise Stephens of Seneca, and Solomon Levi Holbert of Easley. The family will be receiving friends at the Walhalla Presbyterian Church in Walhalla, SC, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 20, 2021, with the memorial service at 10:30 AM with Dr. Clayton Cloer officiating. The family will have a private internment at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the ALS foundation at www.als.org.
